When Is The Best Time Of Year To Lay Turf?

If we had to choose an absolute optimum time for laying turf, it would be during the autumn, but the truth is turf is so hardy it can be laid at any time of year. However, the conditions do need to be right. You can’t lay turf on any old ground and expect a lush and beautiful lawn to just take hold. As expert turf suppliers in Glasgow, we know there is an element of preparation involved. Don’t worry, though, as this article will tell you all you need to know.

Why Autumn And Winter Can Be Best

As already mentioned, you can lay turf all year round, and this is especially the case when it comes to repairing areas of your lawn. However, if you want to have a new lawn established before the summer months come around, laying your turf months before will ensure it has plenty of time to take hold and start growing beautifully.

Another benefit of planting during the autumn and winter is that turf will need less watering during this time because of the inclement weather. This not only saves you time, but it saves you money on your water bill, too. You’ll also be using your lawn less during these months and so you won’t have to worry about damaging fledgling turf as it begins its new life in your garden.

Rolls of turf that you are not yet ready to use will also last longer during the winter. Turf rolls can dry up quickly during the summer months if they are not laid down quickly, but time is less of a factor during the autumn and winter. You can expect turf rolls to keep for around three days during the winter and even longer if they become frozen.

When Not To Lay Turf During The Colder Months

It’s great to be able to take advantage of the winter months and get a head start on your lawn before summer arrives. However, there are some things to be aware of. If your ground has been affected by a heavy frost or has become waterlogged through heavy rain, we would advise waiting until the ground has either thawed or dried out. Trying to get a spade into frozen ground is no fun, and a waterlogged garden is not the best substance to work with when you have to walk around and try to lay turf rolls neatly and evenly.

If you are considering a new lawn this year, leave it to the experts. We are the leading turf suppliers in Glasgow and we would be delighted to assist with your needs.
